Gamini Wijesuriya holds qualifications in Architecture (BSc, MSc), Heritage Management (MA) and Archaeology (MA, PhD). As Director Conservation of the Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka (1983-2000) he was responsible for managing the country’s heritage conservation program. He was then a Principal Regional Scientists of the Department of Conservation of New Zealand (2001–2004), developing science and research strategies for conservation.
Wijesuriya has been an active member of ICOMOS holding variety of positions since 1984, and was elected as the Vice President of the World Archaeological Congress (WAC) in 2003. He has published widely in conservation and management issues. Since 2004 he has been on the staff of ICCROM as a Project Manager in its Sites Unit where he is responsible for organization of Training Courses and activities related to World Heritage.
